NWT Human Rights Commission
The Commission works to prevent discrimination and increase understanding of the NWT Human Rights Act. Its work is based on the principle that we are all equal in dignity and rights. The Commission’s mandate includes:
Education
- The Commission educates the public on their rights and responsibilities under the Act. The Commission offers free workshops, develops publications, and promotes the values in the Act. For more information, visit Education & Outreach.
Research
- The Commission can undertake research on issues related to human rights and the Act.
Advice
- The Commission can advise the Legislative Assembly on matters related the Act. For example, the Commission made submissions on the proposed Safer Community and Neighbourhoods Act – SCAN.
Advocacy
- The Commission can file a complaint or become a party to a complaint when there is a significant public interest in doing so.
Annual report
- The Commission submits an Annual Report to the Legislative Assembly outlining activities of the Commission. To consult our Annual Reports, visit Resources.
Oversight
- The Commission monitors and assesses the effectiveness of the administration of the Act.
