Research Project Executive Summary

The NWT Human Rights Commission has received the completed report on their research into Indigenous and newcomer awareness of human rights in the Territory. The project has been long championed by Commission Vice-Chair Yacub Adam, who advocated for the importance of obtaining baseline data on Indigenous and newcomer knowledge about human rights.  This data allows the Commission to both learn about their experiences of discrimination, and identify any opportunities for improvement in the Commission’s service to these demographics.

The research report’s executive summary is available on our website. Over the next year, we will be reviewing the research findings and recommendations and developing an action plan. The Commission would like to thank all the people who took part in the research project as well as Scott Robertson and his team at Triage Metrix Associates for all their work.

The Commission wants to remind everyone that the NWT Human Rights Act protects the equality rights of all people, Indigenous and newcomers alike. We encourage anyone with questions or concerns to reach out to staff – our inquiry process is completely confidential.
